Automating OSCE Assessment Processes

Over 1,000 FHSCE students have scenario-based clinical assessments (OSCE) as part of their professional programmes of study. The formative assessments are currently recorded on paper — the record being maintained by the student as part of a portfolio of evidence of professional development. The main limitations of this paper-based approach are that there are no mechanisms for monitoring student progress, reflection or feed forward. The use of automated forms supported by custom lists in the VLE will enable tutors to; maintain an online record of both formative and summative assessments, monitor students’ progress, and facilitate an extended reflective cycle.
